Communications Specialist Position in Washington, DC

Kearns & West’s Washington, DC Office has an immediate opening for a communications specialist to support a federal government agency.

Kearns & West is a national collaborative problem solving, dispute resolution, and strategic communications firm with offices in Washington, D.C., Sacramento/Davis, Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco, CA, and Portland, OR. We provide a spectrum of services including project management; outreach and engagement; process and meeting design, conflict resolution including mediation; collaborative decision making; internal and external communications planning; meeting facilitation; and strategic planning.

Communications Specialist Position


  • Develop effective internal and external communication strategies
  • Manage internal communications (memos, newsletters etc.)
  • Draft content for internal and external materials
  • Assist with implementing a range of communications tactics including media outreach, event and meeting planning and execution, social media strategy and execution, and direct outreach  


  • Experience executing communications strategies
  • Experience in copywriting and editing
  • Experience with public involvement for environmental planning is desired
  • Basic understanding of project management principles
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
  • Outstanding organizational and planning abilities
  • Proficient command of English
  • BS/BA in public relations, communications or relevant field

This mid-level position involves multiple responsibilities and roles including: timely monthly reporting and time keeping and establishing and maintaining client and partner relationships.

This position will require regular presence in at the client site/office in Washington, DC office and may require some travel (local, regional, national).

IMMEDIATE HIRE: This is an immediate, full-time hire to support a federal government client.

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel). Demonstrated understanding of federal government processes and protocols. Ability to pass a background investigation and secure a secret clearance.  

PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE: Strong candidates will have three to five years of relevant employment or equivalent experience and will hold an active security clearance. Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is desired.
