Senior Director/Vice President, New York


Based out of the New York Area, the ideal Senior Director/Vice President is a mid-career professional immediately ready to help manage and contribute to a rapidly growing portfolio of high impact clean energy and Just Transition projects with demanding northeast government clients.
 This role will see the ideal candidate spend seventy-five percent of their time on project management, strategic communications, public outreach, stakeholder engagement, and meeting services for complex regional public-private clean energy infrastructure collaborations. Candidates should expect to interface with executive-level government staff, industry representatives, and technical experts to help clients deliver meaningful community and labor engagement that meets and exceeds federal and state requirements for disadvantaged community benefits. 
 The other twenty-five percent of your time will be spent on business development supporting the firm’s clean energy and New York / Northeast Regional practices. The ideal candidate is ready to build and co-lead our rapidly expanding New York office team, tapping into their own network to enhance firm visibility with clients pursuing ambitious clean energy priorities and other initiatives aligned with Kearns & West Sector Areas.

 Key responsibilities include the following:   

  • Develop and implement engagement strategies and plans for stakeholder engagement, interagency and project partner communications, community benefits and equity, and public outreach.   
  • Co-lead team and office management for Kearns & West’s growing NY/NJ office.
  • Identify, engage, and build partnerships with stakeholders, including priority communities, labor unions, equity advisory councils, government agencies, environmental justice advocacy groups, community-based organizations, workforce development organizations, and the general public.  
  • Plan and facilitate stakeholder discussions, group meetings, workshops and events, and internal working groups and teams, using virtual collaborative technologies and in-person. Interface with clients on certain aspects of the outreach and engagement planning.   
  • Support development of targeted materials (e.g., engagement toolkits, presentations, factsheets, newsletters, brochures, websites) to support outreach to minority, low-income, non-English, or limited English proficient, and other communities historically burdened by large infrastructure projects.   
  • Identify, strategize on, and pursue potential policy considerations that can mitigate equity-related impacts. 
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state meaningful community and labor engagement requirements, including the planning, drafting, negotiation, and review of Community Benefits Plans and Workforce and Community Agreements for clean energy infrastructure projects. Includes Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, federal Justice40 initiative, New York State Disadvantaged Community Benefits, and more.        
  • Research, write and synthesize reports, surveys, meeting actions and outcomes, and public feedback summaries, for many types of audiences (including environmental justice communities, multilingual communities, business groups, elected officials, etc.)   
  • Support team and project management. Participate in internal team calls to coordinate roles, tasks and collaborate on ideas.     
  • Develop project proposals including budgets, business development, contract administration, and invoice and expense report preparation.   

The ideal candidate would have work and consulting experience and background in environmental justice and equity related to energy and/or infrastructure planning and projects, and with other sectors such as climate and community and regional planning. Other desirable qualities include:   

  • Deep understanding of and experience facilitating and navigating complex renewable energy, technology and market development, and workforce and community challenges and power dynamics   
  • Ability to build partnerships and relationships with sensitive and priority communities   
  • Proven ability to manage projects in collaboration with multiple team members, including in-house staff, consultants, clients, stakeholders and priority communities and their representatives.   
  • Organized and prepared to contribute to the collaborative culture of our organization   
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently, yet successful at balancing working as part of a team   
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills and demonstrated ability to translate complex concepts into accessible, audience-specific materials.   
  • Strong organizational skills, detail orientation, and ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects.   
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment in an emotionally intelligent and collaborative manner.   
  • Able to reliably set priorities, manage and meet project deadlines on multiple projects for multiple clients, in a fast-paced environment.   
  • Able to travel within New York and the northeastern region, as needed. 


  • MINIMUM EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Master’s degree, other advanced degree or educational equivalent is a plus, and may be considered in lieu of work experience.   
  • PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Successful candidates will have minimum of 10 years of work experience with a background in conflict management and resolution, public stakeholder engagement and strategic communications, local and regional government, public policy, and/or community relations functions. Ideal candidates will have direct experience managing organizational growth from 5 to 50 employees. Besides energy, other relevant topics include water, air, climate, biodiversity, land-use, transportation, and urban planning. Experience working with climate change organizations, state, federal, and industry organizations on clean energy collaborations in the New York Area desired.   
  • REQUIRED SKILLS: Strong writing, presentation, and teamwork skills. Fluency in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel).   
  • DESIRED SKILLS: People Management. Systems and revenue growth management for 5-50 employees.

Compensation decisions are dependent on the unique facts and circumstances of each case, but a reasonable estimate of the current base range for this role is $115K – $180K.  Offers take into account a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience (including lived experience), education, and practice- or project-specific needs and qualifications.
